Headlight Restoration - Why Does It Happen? How Do I Fix It?

If your car is looking a little tired, the headlights are often the main culprit. We recently restored a set of heavily faded headlights on a Mazda MX-5 (check out the before, during, and after photos below) and it completely transformed the car.
When clients come to us at detailR looking to have their headlights polished, they usually have the same key questions about how the process actually works. Here is our breakdown of exactly what we do and why it matters.
❓ "Why have my headlights turned yellow and cloudy?" Modern headlights are made of polycarbonate plastic. From the factory, they are coated with a clear UV protective layer. Over time, UV rays from the sun, harsh weather, and road grime cause this layer to break down, oxidise, and turn a cloudy yellow colour.
❓ "What is the actual process to fix them?" We do not just wipe a temporary chemical over the top. As you can see in the photos, we completely sand away the damaged and failed factory UV layer. Once we reach the fresh plastic underneath, we use a machine polisher to refine the surface until the lenses are absolutely crystal clear again.
❓ "Will they just go cloudy again in a few months?" This is where DIY kits usually fail. If you polish a headlight and leave it bare, it will oxidise again very quickly. At detailR, we protect the freshly restored lenses by applying a premium, self-healing Paint Protection Film (PPF). This adds a robust, invisible UV shield over the plastic, ensuring your headlights stay looking brand new for years to come.
❓ "Is it really worth getting them restored?" Absolutely, and for three major reasons:
Nighttime Safety: Cloudy lenses scatter your headlight beams and severely reduce your visibility in the dark. Restoring them dramatically increases your safety on the road at night.
MOT Pass: Badly faded or clouded headlights are a very common reason for an MOT failure. Restoring them ensures your beam pattern is sharp and legal.
