How Much Does Car Detailing Cost?

That's the million dollar question -- spoiler: it doesn't cost millions. But honestly? It depends.

And we know that's not what you came here to read. So rather than leaving you with a shrug and a "give us a call," we're going to walk you through exactly what goes into the price of professional car detailing, so you can arrive at a ballpark figure that makes sense for your car, your goals and your budget -- before you ever pick up the phone.

Why There's No Single Answer

Professional detailing isn't like a car wash where every car goes through the same tunnel and comes out looking roughly the same. The work we do is tailored to your specific vehicle -- its size, its condition, and what you want to achieve. Two cars can sit side by side and need completely different levels of attention, time and product. That's why pricing is built around a few key factors.

Let's break them down.

1. The Size of Your Vehicle

This one's straightforward, but it makes a bigger difference than most people expect. A compact hatchback has significantly less surface area than a large SUV or MPV -- less paintwork to wash, polish or coat, fewer panels to dry, less glass to treat, and a smaller interior to clean.

At detailR we split vehicles into three broad tiers:

  • Standard Car -- your typical hatchbacks, saloons and smaller coupes

  • Large Car -- larger saloons, estates and performance cars with more surface area

  • SUV / MPV -- anything tall, wide and long

If you're not sure which tier your car falls into, just ask us. We'd rather clarify upfront than surprise you later.

2. The Condition of Your Paintwork

This is probably the single biggest variable in detailing costs, and it's the one most people don't think about until they're standing in our unit watching the light hit their paint at the right angle.

Here's what we look at:

Light swirling and minor dullness Paint that's been maintained reasonably well but has lost some of its clarity. Maybe it's seen a few too many automatic car washes, or it's been dried with the wrong towel. This kind of paint responds brilliantly to a gloss enhancement detail -- a light, single-pass machine polish that brings back depth and brilliance without the need for heavy correction.

More noticeable scratches, swirl marks and oxidation Paint that tells a story -- and not always a good one. This calls for a one-step correction, where a more aggressive polish removes a greater percentage of the defects before a finishing polish brings the gloss back up. It takes longer, uses more product and requires more skill. Rightly so, the price reflects that.

Heavily defected or neglected paint Sometimes a car comes in that needs the full works. A two-step correction uses a cutting stage followed by a refining stage to tackle deep scratches, heavy oxidation and serious swirl damage. The results can be genuinely jaw-dropping, but it's a labour-intensive process that can span multiple days.

The honest truth is that we won't know exactly what your paint needs until we see it in person. That's why we offer a vehicle inspection -- a no-obligation visit where we assess the condition of your car and recommend the right level of correction for your goals and budget.

3. How You Want to Protect Your Car

Getting the paint looking great is one thing. Keeping it that way is another. After the cleaning and correction work is done, most customers want some form of protection applied. This is where things get interesting -- and where your decision can have a real impact on long-term value.

Ceramic Coatings -- How Long Do You Want to Keep the Car?

Ceramic coatings are liquid polymer treatments that chemically bond to your paintwork, creating a hard, hydrophobic layer that repels water, dirt and contaminants. They make your car easier to clean, look better for longer and protect the paint beneath.

We offer three durations:

1-Year Ceramic Coating A great entry point. Ideal if you're planning to sell or change the car within the next year or two, or if you want to try ceramic protection before committing to a longer-term product. It gives you all the hydrophobic benefits of ceramic technology without a larger upfront investment.

3-Year Ceramic Coating Our most popular option, and for good reason. If you're planning to keep your car for a few years, this is the sweet spot between cost and longevity. Applied correctly over properly prepared paintwork, a 3-year coating will reward you with easier maintenance, a persistent gloss and solid everyday protection.

5-Year Ceramic Coating For those who want the best and plan to hold onto their car for the long haul. A 5-year coating is a proper investment in your vehicle's appearance and value. It's thicker, harder and more durable -- and when maintained correctly, it genuinely delivers.

A word on maintenance Whatever coating you choose, how you look after it matters enormously. A well-maintained coating will outperform a neglected one every single time. That means regular maintenance washes using safe methods (no automatic car washes, please), occasional top-up products and booking in for a maintenance wash with us periodically. We'll always give you guidance on how to look after your coating once it's been applied.

Paint Protection Film -- Is It Right for You?

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a physically thick, optically clear film applied directly to the paintwork. Unlike a ceramic coating, which sits on top of the paint as a chemical layer, PPF acts as a physical barrier against stone chips, road debris, bird etching and everyday wear. It can even self-heal minor surface marks with heat.

PPF is priced significantly higher than ceramic coatings because it's a materials-intensive, highly skilled installation. So who is it best suited for?

High mileage drivers If you're covering big miles every week -- motorways, country roads, lots of time behind lorries -- your front end is taking a constant battering from stone chips and road debris. PPF on the front end of the car is one of the most practical investments you can make.

Brand new vehicle owners The best time to protect a car is before it gets damaged, and there's no better moment than when your new car rolls off the forecourt. A New Car Protection Detail with PPF means your paintwork stays in factory-fresh condition from day one. Dealership protection packages rarely come close to the standard of a proper PPF installation from a specialist.

Expensive or rare paint colours Certain paint colours are disproportionately expensive to repair. Deep blacks, dark blues and special order colours can cost hundreds of pounds to touch in professionally if a stone chip gets through. On a car finished in an expensive metallic or a brand-specific special colour, PPF pays for itself the moment it saves you from a costly repair bill.

Drivers focused on resale value A car with immaculate, chip-free paintwork will always command a stronger price on the used market. If you buy well, maintain carefully and sell at the right time, the cost of PPF can be genuinely offset by the premium you achieve when the car goes.

Putting It All Together

So how much does detailing cost? It depends on:

  • Your vehicle size -- standard car, large car or SUV

  • The condition of your paint -- does it need a light enhancement, a one-step correction or a full two-step treatment?

  • The level of protection you want -- a 1, 3 or 5-year ceramic coating, or PPF for serious chip defence

  • Any additional services -- interior deep cleaning, glass coating, engine bay detailing and more

The best way to get an accurate figure for your specific car is to book a vehicle inspection at our Milton Keynes workshop. It's free, there's no obligation and it means we can give you a quote that's built around your car rather than a guess.
